The redevelopment and restoration of the historic buildings of the Council of State has provided accommodation that meets the needs of the growing organisation. Since 1982, the Council of State has been based at the building complex on Kneuterdijk in the historic city centre of The Hague.
The redevelopment and renovation were carried out in two phases. Phase 1 comprised 9,000 m² of new construction and 2,000 m² of restoration. During the integration of the nineteenth-century buildings on Parkstraat, at the corner of Oranjestraat, with the new extension, the historic façade was carefully preserved. Behind the façade, an entirely new building was constructed and seamlessly connected to the original front section. Differences in floor levels were resolved with a series of steps accessed from a glazed atrium, which forms the architectural link between the nineteenth-century buildings and the new extension.
Phase 2 comprised 1,000 m² of new construction within the Sleeswijk complex, 13,000 m² of renovation and 6,000 m² of restoration. New courtrooms and catering facilities were created, while the historic Witte Paleisje on Kneuterdijk was fully restored.
The project was completed in 2011. On 5 October 2011, Queen Beatrix officially opened the renovated complex by unveiling a commemorative plaque.
